Or can one just connect the Infinity Modem to the router via a standard LAN ethernet port on the router to prevent the data running through the routers

Yes, the HH3 needs the OR modem - it has the red BT Infinity socket, which connects to the modem , also 4 Ethernet ports, but only one is GigE.
